Newport NewsTimes - Cougar Peak Fire, NLFR Involvement ..
If you don't get the Newport News-Times, there is an excellent article on page A2 about North Lincoln Fire & Rescue assisting a seriously ill firefighter while helping with the Cougar Peak Fire in Lake County, OR.
Here is the article (link) in the newspaper. (consider subscribing if you don't already!)
If you can't open the link, here are a few paragraphs from the article:
NLFR deployed on Sept. 9, making up the bulk of Task Force 57 under the leadership of NLFR Fire Chief Rob Dahlman. In addition to personnel, the district sent a water tender, two Type 6 engines and a command vehicle to the growing Cougar Peak Fire, which was reported to be around 86,000 acres in size at the time, with more than 1,000 personnel engaging it. Two Type 6 engines from Nehalem Bay Fire and Sutherlin joined NLFR to complete the task force.
During their deployment, NLFR personnel were the first responders to a medical emergency on the fire line where a contractor operating a water tender fell ill and required immediate medical attention. The entire Task Force 57 team responded to the incident and helped provide care.
After assessing the man at the scene, it became clear the he needed to be transported to a hospital for emergency care, with NLFR Firefighter/Paramedic Brian Nordyke accompanying him by helicopter to Skylakes Medical Center in Klamath Falls for surgery.
Lincoln County Fire Defense Board Chief Bryan Daniels commended NLFR’s efforts in a Wednesday press release regarding the deployment.
“To speak of their efforts on the fire line, Task Force 57 was recognized by the IMT Blue Team in the successful and lifesaving treatment of a water tender operator, who was experiencing a critical medical event on the fireline,” Daniels stated in a press release. “Crews from North Lincoln Fire & Rescue initiated ALS care and Firefighter/Paramedic Nordyke flew into Klamath Falls with the patient via medevac. Chief Dahlman managed the incident within an incident and received many thanks from our federal partners and the OSFM. Lincoln County was again well represented and appreciated.”
